Where to sleep in Paris? Find out which neighborhood to stay in for a successful visit to the French capital, the most visited city in the world!
With 12.4 million inhabitants and a population density of 21,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, Paris is often criticized as being one of the most expensive cities in the world, alongside London, Tokyo, and Sydney. Yet, considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it attracts more than 22 million visitors – both French and foreign – each year. To accommodate everyone, the French capital has an abundant supply of hotel accommodations with 116,000 rooms, not to mention Airbnb apartments.
Paris is like a small country within France, divided into 20 districts and 80 administrative neighborhoods. Each has its own identity, culture, history, and unique atmosphere. Paris has been so frequently sung about, filmed, and photographed – all over the world – that each of its corners evokes an important aspect of French culture. However, it can be difficult to know where to stay, so here is a presentation of the best neighborhoods to stay in Paris.
The Latin Quarter
A district of students, poets, and artists throughout the centuries, the Latin Quarter is one of the oldest in Paris. This is the neighborhood to choose for sleeping in Paris if you enjoy mingling with academics, professors, students, and artists in a dynamic yet stress-free atmosphere. The area is home to the remnants of the Gallo-Roman arenas of Lutetia, the famous Sorbonne University, the Pantheon, the Luxembourg Palace and its vast garden, Boulevard Saint-Michel, and the renowned Odéon Theatre. It’s a pleasant neighborhood, heavily charged with history and art. You will find hotels rated from one to four stars.

Montmartre
World-renowned, the Montmartre district, on its namesake hill, is home to the famous Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur, built on the site where the struggle of the Commune began in 1871 against the Prussians and the monarchists of the Versailles government. To stay in Paris, the Montmartre district will be the one for a successful romantic and cultural getaway. It also hosts the Place du Tertre, one of the city’s must-see spots.
Also, unmissable restaurants such as the Moulin de la Galette and even a 2000 m² vineyard right in Paris! This is the Clos Montmartre, a vineyard over a thousand years old! Sleeping in Paris in the Montmartre district means walking the cobblestones once trodden by great figures like G. Apollinaire, P. Picasso, C. Chaplin… At Place des Abesses, couples will experience their love at the Wall of I Love Yous to the sound of musette accordions or gypsy swing. Finally, take advantage of the Montmartre cemetery to see the graves of great historical personalities.

Batignolles, Épinettes, Plaine-Monceau
Between the high society, chic hotels of the south, and the popular neighborhoods of the north, the Batignolles-Monceau district offers a good compromise for staying in Paris. Located in the largest district of the capital – the 17th –, the names of the boulevards will remind you of numerous songs and many films: Batignolles, Clignancourt, Clichy… It’s a peaceful neighborhood with many parks, like the famous Parc Monceau and the Square des Batignolles, which will enhance your sunny days.
You’ll appreciate the Place Charles-de-Gaulle-Étoile or the Place de Clichy and the small village atmosphere in the northwest of Paris. One can imagine walking in the footsteps of illustrious characters who have marked contemporary cultural history: Verlaine, Manet, Degas, Mallarmé, Barbara, Brel, Brassens, Renaud, Mano Solo, etc. From popular to starred, you will find good cuisine and many bars frequented by Parisian youth. It’s our little favorite for staying in Paris: central, artistic, historical, relaxed, friendly, and cosmopolitan!

Saint-Germain-des-Prés
Here is a very small neighborhood, adjacent to the Latin Quarter. Tiny, but very popular for its charm and known for its bohemian atmosphere, architecture, art galleries, and churches. Surrounded by the Seine, one can arrive either by the quays – near the famous Pont des Arts and Pont Neuf – and also by the Saint-Germain-des-Prés or Mabillon metro stations. Poets and writers are accustomed to settling here, so follow in the footsteps of Verlaine and Rimbaud (but also many others!), find an independent bookstore, and enjoy a good coffee or wine on the terrace of a typically Parisian bistro. A rather boho but unpretentious atmosphere, where people love good things but without excess. Are you an Epicurean who loves art? This is the neighborhood for you!

Faubourg Saint-Germain
Formerly a settlement “outside the walls” of Paris, Faubourg Saint-Germain today represents the district of ministries on the west bank of the left bank. It’s a very chic and prestigious neighborhood, where you will obviously discover the Eiffel Tower, the Champ-de-Mars garden, the famous Quais de Branly, d’Orsay, the Musée d’Orsay, a large number of institutions of the Republic – such as the Hôtel Matignon, the Palais Bourbon, where the National Assembly sits – as well as the largest ministries and numerous private mansions. Needless to say, the prices will be exceedingly high, this neighborhood is very central, but caters more to wealthy visitors.

Opera, Grands Boulevards, Bourse
This is the district of great restaurants, gourmets, and also theater enthusiasts who animate the streets in the evening. If you like festive and outgoing places, prefer the bars in the Marais and Bastille districts. From the Opera to the Bourse, it’s a chic area – again – where accommodation rates are rather expensive. Like the entire second arrondissement, it’s also the district for quality shopping, with major high-end fashion brands. Enter the Opéra Garnier if you are a fan of great music and ballets. If you love upscale artistic atmospheres, fashion design, and French gastronomy, look no further for where to stay in Paris!
